This is yet another novel talking about the incest and adulteries which are so popular in recent readings.
It seems the writer follows a routine formular - the male character who is almight and strong in sex. He dominates lots of beautiful weman, no matter they are his mother, aunt or any close relationship in blood tie. He is always the winner and the weman are his slaves.
The topic of the novel is very well named - "The Romantic Sward in The Kingdom" (Translated by me) The words "Romantic Sward" immediately suggests to the readers that they are prepared to read something that might be full of sex and bloodshed.
Then in the preview of the novel, the writer gives a brief instruction of the characteristic of each character who appears in the novel. This is a similar pattern of writing popular in nowadays writing. There are good points and bad points: it is good that the readers will have a summery of the characterisation of the major and minor characters in the story. Besides, they are given the information of the flow of the story so they know roughly what the story is about. Finally they are expected to read some very sexually explicit writings by the writer's choice of dictions in his introduction. But the most obvious drawback is just becuase the readers are given the basic background of the novel, they may lose the interest to go on reading.
Why? It is quite similar that a lady who wears sexy clothes with some sort of baring parts of her female organs, looks more attractive than a totally nude lady. It is simply based on the human nature of the male's human nature - the strong desire to spy and look for something hidden behind. It is the sense of "mystery" that will arouse the readers to go on reading in order to seek for the truth. But as the writer has given a summery of the background story, the readers' interests or curiorsity may be dampened as they more or less know what the story is about and what they expect to read.
Another similar formular is the ceasely love making during which the male character is the king of king not only in politics and power, but also in sex. He seems to have possessed endless energy in loving making, he won't feel tired even after series of ejacculations. But just because he is given by the writer such spetacular strenghth and sex power, he is able to conquer not only his kingdom, but also countless weman.
Whether you like it or not, this is the type of stories which are full of incest, adultery and endless sex scenes.
Starting from the beginning of the story, we are given a touch of the sexual description of how the son teases his mother and then follows the loving making with her. Then when the story goes on, we have more or less similar pattern of sex depition. This time may be his aunt, or next time may be his cousin etc. If the readers like this style of writing, they will never be disappointed because they will see and smell the nasty and brutal tastes in the love makings.
But as such a story is too male dominated, the weman are put to be slaved, no matter she is his mother or aunt. In today's view, it is of course unacceptable to those who hold strict standing of moral standard. But in the olden time, especially the story background takes place at the northern part of China, a man has married a number of wives is a common matter.
What we do miss out is the detail description of the inward and pyschological descriptions of the feelings of both sexes in love making. It seems they behave like dogs and bitches. Once they meet each other, they will start the love game.
I personally consider this novel will be more attractive if the novelist will give us an indepth characterisation of the feelings of the characters, no matter they are in sex making or not.
